It's not like riding a horse, by any means, but you do use muscles that aren't used to it.
The latest "thing" in ATV's is what is called "side by side" configuration. They resemble a dune buggy but are built & equipped specifically for trail riding. People have said they love them and several we know have traded into this new model. Not to be outdone, we tried out one of these, seated side by side instead of back and front as on a motorcycle. Fortunately, neither of us liked it. We did not feel comfortable; it felt awkward and somewhat unstable, insecure. So we're happy with the one we have, and sure saved a bunch of $$.
