The route we take coming back to LC from Vail is always pretty, always different in some way than the last time. On this occasion, as we entered the Buena Vista area from the east at almost midday, the Collegiate Peaks resembled an old Hollywood painted scenery flat.
The Collegiate Peaks always dominate the scene here, but today they took on an unreal appearance.
The valley below, with its verdant irrigated patches, looks miniscule in comparison. There was something about the light on that Saturday morning that transformed the view into something almost artificial looking.
We found this sign on an observation point, where we began and ended many a hike back when we were mobile and spent several weeks in nearby camp parks. Now we find that all those hikes have an umbrella name, the combined routes are called "Spaghetti Western." Amusing.
Turning our backs to the Collegiate Peaks, up in the distance we spotted the house on the ridge...quite a view from up there, we're certain, but pretty windy at times as well.
We ended this somewhat nostalgic stop with one last view of the mountains and drove on for lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in the West....Jan's, in Buena Vista. If you're ever in that part of the country, try the chicken fried steak!
