June 10, SNOW

Woke this morning after a good night's rest to heavy clouds, soon turning into rain. As we finished our cold cereal with blueberries & toast breakfast we could see the mts. through our big back window, covered with new snow.

Today looks like an inside job day, plenty to do, just not our favorite thing! I'd rather be situating my flower pots and planning my planting. E'd rather be getting the ATV running (battery's charging).

Had our first occasion of blowing an electric breaker last evening, finally remembered the "trick" to resetting it after turning off all those heavy draw small appliances. Had an elec. skillet, the elec. heater, and the battery charger all going at once when the toaster was turned on and POP...there it went. We are slow learners.

Am stopping this form of procrastination (writing) and moving on to the tasks at hand, first one is to get dressed (at almost 9 am!). E's already dressed and banging in and out the door, of course!

June 9, 2009 It's a New Day, It's a New Year

Looks like it's been a long, long time since we used this method of keeping track of our lives. The fall, winter and spring months are already a blur--full of good times and good friends. And the completion of the long-awaited patio yard project that's been 9 years in the thinking stage.

Now we're already in Colorado for the 2009 summer season, getting acclimated to the altitude and our STUFF out of storage and organized.

Sights and impressions on our 3-day trip to Lake City:

The always impressive beauty and grandeur of the drive from @Superior, AZ to Pinetop.

Reminiscing about our previous experiences through this landscape, including the dramatic and terrible blow up of our truck's engine, pulling our 5th wheel, on the upslope of the Salt River Canyon several years ago.

Winning! at blackjack at the Hondah casino.

The stunning costumes and natural beauty of the Native Americans participating in the PowWow in the Pines at Hondah.

The seductive beat of the dance drums that demands a rhythmic response from our "whitebread" bodies.

The wind!!

Hawks in great numbers, soaring over every valley and through every canyon.

Sturdy, gallant pinons that survive the harsh high plains winter winds and weather.

Sighting the first small stand of aspens, shimmying behind a split rail fence.

Periwinkle-lavender wildflowers lie in undulating swathes of loveliness in the southwestern Colorado meadows.

Eye-soothing landscape, lush green, everywhere we turn.

Good food, hospitable and happy people, everywhere we stop.

An unlikely, 50-something man, Polish immigrant desk clerk at the EconoLodge in Pagosa Springs.

Delicate yellow wild narcissus blooming on the highway 160 right-of-way.

The wind!! We're glad we're not pulling a trailer.

Our eagerness to start the drive up the Rio Grande valley (Silver Thread Highway), nature at its best in any season.

Delight to have once again arrived, safely, here in Lake City.

Sights and impressions in our short, 2-day Lake City experience:

How quickly we forget to worry about whatever we forgot to do or forgot to bring.

The feeling that we have infinite time to do whatever must be done, no deadlines, no pressure.

But DON'T forget to pay our estimated income tax!!

It's cold!! Heavy socks, jackets & long pants are back.

The aspens aren't even leafed out yet in many places. It's been a cold, wet, windy spring & early summer.

Henson Creek, right outside our picture window, nevertheless isn't as high as it was last year.

Our trailer really is as nice as we remember. All's in good shape.

Bless Joe Hoover, he has our entertainment system working--CD, DVD player & TV--along with having slideouts out, utilities turned on and everything set up for our arrival.

Our bed is wonderful!

Slept 10 hr. last night, after an afternoon & evening when we both felt like we'd been hit by a truck.

Today's like a new world, we woke feeling rested and energetic.

Lunch yesterday was at what used to be Charley P's, now Old Timers Restaurant, OK but not exciting.

Supper at Southern Vittles fulfilled a long-awaited desire--a 5-pc. plate of their featured chicken-fried chicken tenders, fries, and a bowl of white gravy!! YUM, for $5.95!

Our waitress, studying nursing in a Texas state college, says her passion is nursing, can't imagine doing anything else, and she's looking forward, after a lifetime of summer waitressing in this type restaurant, "to having a job that doesn't involve fried chicken." We both cracked up.

Our cases of wine (Blue Fin from Trader Joe's, $4/bottle), are safely ensconced under the trailer where it's nice & cool.

Our Verizon cell phone service works.

It's great to see all our fellow campers, renew our friendships with hugs all around. Some are away on side trips, have been run out by 2 wk. of rain and high wind.

Reports are that fishing is good, we'll test this eventually; first we need to stock up on some food in Montrose, 90 mi. one way, we buy locally just what it takes to get by till we go to a full service grocery (soap, cereal, milk, bread, butter).

Time to quit for today.
